Research Subject
Information
Study
Purpose: Hearing aids are not able to completely restore
hearing to normal. Often, speech
is difficult to understand, especially in noise. The aim of this research is to
investigate a novel sound processing strategy for hearing aids to see how
it can be used to improve the way individuals with hearing loss understand
speech.
Who
can participate: We are looking for hard-of-hearing
individuals who are 18 years or older who either wear a hearing aid or have
been told they need one.
What
to Expect: A hearing
test will first be conducted to determine the amount of hearing loss in
each ear. The hearing test and
the subsequent study tasks will be performed in a sound-treated booth. During these we will ask you to
listen to a series of speech sounds and then respond using a computer
mouse.
Experiment sessions are generally scheduled for
one or two-hour periods. We
have allotted time for breaks and encourage you to take them when you feel
they are necessary.
Location
and Parking:
The Experimental Amplification Research (EAR)
Lab is located on the third floor of Lyles-Porter Hall (715 Clinic Drive) on the
Purdue University campus.
Participants can park in the Harrison Street
Garage (PGH on the map) and then walk directly into LYLE.
Once inside LYLE, proceed to the main elevators
and stairway. Please wait in
the seating area near the elevators on the third floor, call the lab at 765-494-5956,
and someone will greet you there.
Payment:
The study pays $15.00/hour and will involve several one or two-hour
sessions. You will receive your payment check,
by mail, approximately two to three weeks after your session.
