Parallel Threads

(May 2008) with two lead singers and a female chorus

(May 2007) second recording with a female duet (w/o the tea-picking dance)

(April 2007) first recording with a soprano (w/o the tea-picking dance)

If we regard music as parallel threads of musical ideas, there exist infinite opportunities to create novel ways to weave threads into new textures. For example, one may try to mix western musical ideas and instruments with those in Chinese traditional operas, folk tunes, and classical solo pieces. The mixture of the ideas can both appear in serial and in parallel. If one goes further by introducing ideas and instruments from modern western pop music (such as "hard rock&roll" and jazz) as new threads, things might become even more interesting. Digital and computing technologies have made experiments of this sort easier.

This page documents a number of experiments conducted during a relatively short time span, which are listed
in (approximately) chronological order. The composer feels deep gratitude towards the vocalists who have assisted
in these experiments. Honoring their wish to remain anonymous, all singers and lyrics contributors are
identified by pseudonyms only.
