Middle Kids Find The Love On First Album

Middle Kids frontwoman Hannah Joy isn't sure which came first, her marriage or her band.

A few years ago, Joy teamed up with Tim Fitz, a fellow singer-songwriter, and realised they were on to something special.

"We wrote the song Fire In Your Eyes before the band, but it was how we met each other. He produced that and then we kind of started dating, so I think the music really brought us together, which is nice but also so weird because it's like this big rolling ball where we don't know which one ends and the other begins," Joy told AAP.

They had both tried performing with other artists and been working as soloists, but something clicked when they came together.

"We'd been doing our own thing for ages, we'd both been making music since we were teenagers, young kids, but it was just so cool because it was just so clear to us that making things together was so much better than anything we'd made," she said.

It didn't take long for this chemistry to turn into something strong and the pair formed indie band Middle Kids with drummer Harry Day.

Within their first year together, the Sydney band had achieved most of their goals. They signed to EMI in Australia and to the famous indie label Domino Records in the US, where they've also toured extensively. Just last week, the trio performed on Jimmy Kimmel's popular US talk show and they will release their first album, Lost Friends, on Friday.

"When we first got together we were like 'Let's get signed and go play in America' and we did, so now we don't know. We just want to keep touring and get started on the next album. We're pretty stoked," she said.

The first album is their second release after 2017 self-titled EP, which featured their breakout hit Edge of Town.

It's a continuation of the same emotive, indie-rock music exploring themes of love and hope, and Joy says even their marriage is up for scrutiny.

"There's a song on there called Don't Be Hiding, which is talking about Tim, but that for me was a really beautiful experience because that's really about learning how to accept each other, ugliness and beauty and all," she said.

The band will be on tour soon, including their first headline show at the Sydney Opera House for 99 DEWA Vivid Live and the Splendour in the Grass festival, as their debut album is unleashed onto the world.

"Regardless of how it goes out in the world, we feel like we loved the process of making it. It feels like the thing we wanted to make and that's the best outcome I think you can have."
