Bolter/Grusin and the EA gaming challenge

…ran across a BBC story discussing the intent of Electronic Arts (EA – a $3b gaming company in 2004) to compete with and overtake the entertainment industry. Much of the language used in this story echoes themes from the Bolter/Grusin discussion, particularly the section on hypermediacy. The BBC piece is a quick read that you might find interesting.

As a Madden football junkie, I can honestly say that it is now hard to determine whether the games reflects the television broadcasts or the television broadcasts reflect the games... E.A.'s hyper realism is well documented, and the camera angles in the game (typically behind the quarterback) are now appearing in regular broadcasts (a new multi million dollar camera that hangs above the field on a trip wire).
