Education & Background
I received my Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2007. I also eared a M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities (of Minneapolis and Saint Paul). For undergraduate study, I majored two areas: Computer Science & Engineering (B.S.) and Statistics (B.S.) in Korea University in (South) Korea.
I worked at Samsung SDS Co. as a software engineer for seven years. After my Ph.D., I joined to Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne in 2007. Currently, I’m an Associate Professor in Computer Science Department, and a director in the Computer Science Graduate Program at Purdue University Fort Wayne.
My research areas are data science and data management which include skills and technology from database systems, data mining, machine learning and statistics. My research concerns on the development of scalable algorithms for data mining, data management and data-driven knowledge discovery, with a particular emphasis on non-traditional data such as spatial (geospatial) data, temporal data, graph/network data and scientific data. I am also interesting in identifying viable data science opportunities, and designing, developing and fielding data mining and machine learning solutions that have measurable impact to applications.
Current research projects concern big data analytic methods (e.g., parallel and distributed data analytics algorithms on Hadoop and Spark) and big data management techniques such as NoSQL and data warehousing in cloud computing environment. I have received Microsoft Azure Research Award for big data science research. Resent works have been presented in the IEEE International Congress on Big Data, the ASE International Conference on Big Data, the IEEE International Conference on Big Data, International Conference on Advances on Big Data Analytics, and so on. I’m also working for Big Data Science technology education.
My research has been supported by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Air Force Research Laboratory, Microsoft Research, Purdue Research Foundation, Griffiss Institute/SUNY Research Foundation, Indiana University, and so on. I am an Air Force Faculty Fellow. I have worked as an Air Force Summer Visiting Faculty at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory/Rome Research Site. During the last sabbatical, I was a visiting faculty at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Daejeon, Korea.
I have served as the key organizer or program committee in numerous top-tier international conferences and often as the reviewer of international journals such as IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE) and IEEE Transactions on Knowledge Discovery from Data (TKDD). I have also worked as the review panel of NSF (National Science Foundation) programs such as NSF-CISE and NSF-IIS.
I direct Data and Data Science (DDS) Lab at Purdue University Fort Wayne. Students, domain experts and industry people are welcome to work with me in all areas of data mining, big data analytics/management, machine learning, database and related applications.

SSTD is the fifth event of a series of biannual symposia that discuss new and exciting research in spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal data management and related technologies and start setting future research directions. The SSTD publications have high impact on spatial and temporal data research area in computer science and other relative area.
