WATER INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR AFRICA (WISEA)

WISEA

TOWARDS DATA-DRIVEN
DECISION-MAKING AND MANAGEMENT

Surface and ground water availability in the region varies substantially with time and climate, and across subregions. Water deficits are common and inter-basin transfers are necessary in some areas to meet basic water needs. Land use, land management, and climate changes are key factors affecting the integrity of water resources, yet related data are generally insufficient to enable decision-making and management for water resources. The overall goal of this initiative is to provide data access, processing capacity, and decision support to improve water resources (quantity, quality) management in Africa. The Initiative provides the information and tools needed to improve water resources decision-making and management and, ultimately, water security in Africa.

A BUSINESS CASE FOR INVESTMENT IN AGRI-FOOD SYSTEM TECHNOLOGIES IN AFRICA

Africa’s population is expected to exceed 2 billion by 2050, nearly a 100% increase over the current level with upto 60% living in cities. It is estimated that the combined spending power of Africa’s top 18 cities could top $1.3 trillion. While African agriculture employs as much as 70% of the labor force, it contributes an average of only 15% to the continent’s GDP with only 10% of Africa’s farms being mechanized. Given the potential for significant growth, agriculture can be the engine of Africa's economic transformation for the next 20 years or more. The Alliance for Modernizing African Agri-food Systems initiative (AMAA) takes a holistic approach in exploring the adoption of modern technologies to accelerate improvements in the food value chain in Sub-Saharan Africa.
