Committee on Second Language Writing
The CCCC Executive Committee approved the creation of the CCCC Committee on Second Language Writing in the fall of 1998. The goal of the committee is to integrate the second-language perspective into the institutional practices of CCCC. The committee's charges include:
Serve as an official liaison between CCCC and TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages);
Develop a position statement concerning second language writing issues;
Identify, develop and provide resources for CCCC members; and
Put forth recommendations for the Executive Committee on issues related to second language writing.
The L2 Writing Committee has developed the CCCC Statement on Second Language Writing and Writers, which was adopted by the Executive Committee in November 2000. This document was also endorsed by TESOL Board of Directors in February 2001. The statement was presented and discussed at 2001 SIG meeting at the CCCC Annual Convention in Denver, Colorado and published in June 2001 issue of College Composition and Communication.
The Committee is also developing a list of resources for CCCC members who work with or wish to learn more about L2 writers. In addition, plans for book-length publications from NCTE focusing on L2 writing is currently being developed.
The members of CCCC Committee on Second Language Writing are: Paul Kei Matsuda, chair; Akua Duku Anokye; Helen Fox; Linda Harklau, Susan K. Miller, Shondel Nero, Tony Silva; Guadalupe Valdés; and Bob Weissberg.
