2+1 Artworks » Wanderer Over a Sea of Fog
This painting by Caspar David Friedrich has been my favorite since the first time I saw it two years ago. Called “Wanderer Over a Sea of Fog,” it is a romantic-era painting and I love it because it represents escaping the modern, complicated world for the overwhelming, powerful, uncomplicated beauty of nature. I feel that this painting directly connects to this course because of the symbolism of the wanderer’s formal attire, representing the highest achievements of society which include technology and innovation. This painting encapsulates the struggle between nature’s mysterious beauty and society’s constructed ideals of beauty and propriety.
