Reconstruction of the acropolis of Attalid Pergamum, Hellenistickingdom in Asia Minor (c. 270-133 BC).  Prime example of Hellenistic urban planning, entailing adaptation of uneven sloping landscape to an axially arranged complex of monumental structures.  Besides the royal palace, the site included the great library, the theater, the celebrated Altar of Zeus, and temples to Dionysos and the Roman Emperor Trajan.

 

State Gymnasium at Pergamum, the largest surviving gymnasium of the ancient world. Gymnasia incorporated open earth exercise grounds and running tracks enclosed by washrooms, classrooms, and ceremonial lecture halls. Gymnasia formed the recursive institutions of Greco-Roman civilization.
