Geminate Typology and the Perception of Consonant Length

In this project I am researching how perception of consonant length is affected by contextual factors, such as position in the word (word-initial, word-final, or word-medial), prosodic properties of the syllable (stress), and adjacent sounds, their sonority in particular. The ultimate goal is to establish whether a connection exists between the observed perceptual patterns and the crosslinguistic positional typology of geminate consonants. Current results suggest that the crosslinguistic preference for short-long consonantal contrasts in the intervocalic position may be related to a relatively greater ease with which durational contrasts are perceived in this environment.
