I have also taught a dozen Chinese language and East Asian Civilization courses. The latter emphasize the complex and increasingly global identities of being Chinese. Through topics such as the Tibetan exile in India, dramatic influx of East Asian immigrants in Las Vegas, and the Zu Lai Temple of São Paulo, students see the growing presence of East Asian culture worldwide. Course readings further underscore the unintended consequences of such expansion (e.g., racial discrimination, gender inequality, anti-immigrant laws). These international perspectives raise awareness and knowledge about China, as well as enhance students’ understanding of their own culture.
