Associate Professor of  Manufacturing

Home

Our research areas are laser materials processing, micro/nano manufacturing, bulk manufacturing of micro/nano 3D structures, mechanical/physical property enhancement of materials, multiplayer processing of nano-biomaterials.  Our group conducts multiscale simulation and experiments in laser induced plastic deformation, multiphysics simulation and experiments in laser sintering of nanoparticles, and laser micromachining of high aspect ratio structures.  These research results lead to mass production of 3D structures, surface nanostructures with improved mechanical properties, and low temperature processing of multilayer biomaterials.

Dr. Cheng received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Columbia University in 2002.    He received the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in 2007 and the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2006.  He received Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineer (SME) in 2007.  Dr. Cheng served as an associate Editor for Journal of Manufacturing Process.  He also organized and chaired technical conferences and workshops of ASME, SME and other societies.

At Purdue, Dr. Cheng teaches IE370 "Manufacturing Process".
