NSF/TIH PI Meeting and Workshop - Travel Info

Travel Info

The Baltimore, Maryland airport code is BWI. Washington Dulles (IAD) and Washington National (DCA) are also closeby.

The DATE of the workshop has been fixed for May 22 & 23, 2023 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The hotel and meeting place will be in Baltimore, MD at the Renaissance Hotel Harborplace. We want to get the airport info out ASAP, so PIs on both sides of the ocean can start making flight reservations.

You can arrange to fly directly to Baltimore Airport (BWI) or, if you prefer, you can fly to Washington National (DCA) or Washington Dulles (IAD) and take the train to downtown Baltimore. The DC Metro (subway) has a convenient station on the Red Line, accessible from both IAD or DCA, and from Union Station you can take either Amtrak or the MARC to Baltimore/Camden. Both are fairly affordable (from $10 – 30). It will take 1-1.5 hours to get from the airport to Union Station and another 75 minutes to Baltimore (Camden).

We expect participants will be able to arrange flights to leave from BWI after 4:30 pm on May 23 and after 5:30 pm from DCA or IAD.

More details are coming.....

Using the DC Metro (subway)

METRO travel is based on distance, so you need a card to swipe in and out of the METRO transfer area. Rush hour fares are also more expensive than off-peak fares. You can purchase a card at the machines and put a minimal amount of money on the card. Ten dollars is recommended. You can re-charge your card by adding money at the machines.

You can get full information, including a trip planner, from the METRO site.

A quick map of the system:

From DCA to the Baltimore hotel

From Washington National (DCA), follow signs in the main terminal to the METRO. Purchase a pass at the entry (can use a credit card on most machines) and take the Yellow Line toward Greenbelt or Fort Totten. (This will take you toward the Pentagon station. Do not get on the Yellow Line toward Franconia-Springfiled.) Transfer from the Yellow Line to the Red Line at Gallery Place. Take the Red Line toward Glenmont. Get off at Union Station.

Union Station has both MARC and Amtrak trains to Baltimore. You can take either one, based on the next available train. Once at Camden station, take an Uber/Lyft/Taxi to 202 East Pratt Street.

Transfer from the Silver Line to the Red Line at Metro Center. Take the Red Line toward Glenmont. Get off at Union Station.

Union Station has both MARC (Camden station) and Amtrak (Baltimore station) trains to Baltimore. You can take either one, based on the next available train, and purchase a ticket at Union Station.
